Liver-Related Work

The Chiu laboratory focuses on developing bioinformatics models, particularly using artificial intelligence, to model complex multi-omics related to cancer. The primary objective is to design models that integrate large genomics and pharmacogenomics data, enhancing our understanding of cancer biology and advancing cancer treatment. As a PLRC Pilot & Feasibility Grant awardee, Dr. Chiu places a special emphasis on hepatocellular carcinoma and hepatoblastoma, which are among the most prevalent and challenging liver cancers in adults and children, respectively. His laboratory has pioneered efficient deep learning tools capable of predicting the response of individual cancer samples (such as cell lines and tumors) to drug treatments and genetic perturbations based on their multi-omics profiles. To date, these in silico assays have the capability of rapidly screening approximately 5,000 potential anti-cancer compounds and around 17,000 gene knockouts. Additionally, the Chiu laboratory has developed user-friendly web tools that enable biomedical and clinical researchers to utilize these AI models without needing extensive programming skills or computational resources.
