PLRC Seminar Series Dr. Anand Mehta @ S120 BST

Dr. Anand S. Mehta, PhD

Senior Associate Dean for Research, College of Medicine, and SmartState Endowed Chair of Proteomic Biomarkers and Professor, Department of Cell and Molecular Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics

Medical University of South Carolina, SC

Seminar Title: The use of Spatial-omics to find biomarkers for HCC

Dr. Mehta is focused on understanding and developing diagnostic methods and treatments for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and his group help developed a method referred to as “glycoproteomics,” and used this method to identify several serum biomarkers of liver disease and liver cancer.  His lab was one of the first to perform total serum glycan analysis for biomarker detection and one of the first to perform serum glycoproteomics. Through this, Dr. Mehta and his group have identified over 50 serum glycoproteins with altered glycosylation in those with HCC. These changes are directly associated with the tumor and to the genetics of the cancer. Dr. Mehta has developed new methods for both the tissue and serum analysis of glycans and continues to identify novel markers of liver cancer and to understand the role of the altered glycosylation in cancer development and progression.
