Dr. George Michalopoulos, MD, PhD, professor of Pathology and world renowned expert in liver regeneration has made seminal contributions over the last 4 decades to our basic understanding of the mechanisms of liver regeneration and he continues to do so. From his early work in discovering hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) to extracellular matrix remodeling/signaling and defining the “hepatostat” controlling the liver-to-body weight volume, and more recent work with inhibition of growth factor receptors, he has authored scores of publications on liver regeneration including many review articles. In fact, bibliometric analyses of publications over the past 20 years reveals that the United States was the most influential country with regard to publications on Mechanisms of Liver Regeneration and the University of Pittsburgh published the most articles and George Michalopoulos was the most co-cited author. The details are published in an article in Frontiers in Pharmacology.
